Choosing the right time

There is a branch of astrology that takes no interest in "what will happen to me": electional astrology. It asks one question — "when should I do this?" The Best Time Finder in Moon Compass implements the calculable part of that tradition.

What is electional timing?

Electional astrology is about choosing a moment to begin something. It does not read a birth chart or interpret a person. It looks only at the time itself.

The reasoning: a venture carries the quality of the moment it began. If you can choose the starting moment, you have some say over its conditions. Launching ships, laying foundations and sowing seed have been dated this way for centuries.

Filter or score?

This is the app's most important design decision. Use many criteria as filters and the result comes back empty — nine conditions rarely align even once a month.

So the criteria are split in two:

Filters (3) — remove unsuitable time outright

• Void of course Moon — void periods are excluded entirely
• Working hours — sensible hours for the task; suggesting 3 a.m. for a contract is useless
• Retrograde — the relevant planet's retrograde days

Scores (6) — rank what remains

• Moon's sign — fixed signs for permanence, cardinal for beginnings, mutable for adaptability
• Moon phase — waxing to start, waning to finish
• Planetary hour — the ruler suited to the task
• Moon's aspects — soft aspects to Venus or Jupiter add, hard aspects to Mars or Saturn subtract
• Via Combusta — 15° Libra to 15° Scorpio, traditionally avoided
• Margin before the next void — a window that ends just as a void begins leaves you rushing

Working hours: not astrology, just sense

One of the nine criteria has nothing to do with the sky. Even with the calculation right, proposing Tuesday at 02:40 to sign a contract is a useless suggestion — the office is shut and the other party is asleep.

This is not a guarantee; it is a planning constraint. A bad contract signed at a good hour is still a bad contract. Electional timing does not stand in for the decision — it only orders your options in the calendar you already have.

Some people avoid scheduling important work for a Friday afternoon. This is the same kind of preference; the difference is that it rests on a calculation.
