What is the Void of Course Moon?

Before the Moon leaves one zodiac sign for the next, there is a stretch of time when it makes no more major aspects to any planet. Traditional astrology calls this period "void of course". Here is what it means, how long it lasts, and why people track it.

The short definition

The Moon is the fastest-moving body in the sky. It spends roughly two and a half days in each sign, and during that time it forms aspects to the other planets one after another: conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition.

At some point it completes the last of those aspects. The Moon is still in the sign, but it will not form another major aspect before leaving it. That gap is the void of course Moon.

The void ends the moment the Moon enters the next sign. Every void period therefore ends with a sign change.

How long does it last?

It varies. A void can last a few minutes or more than a day, depending on which degree of the sign the Moon was in when it completed its last aspect:

• Last aspect at 28° of the sign → a short void, perhaps half an hour.
• Last aspect at 5° → the Moon crosses the rest of the sign without aspects; the void can run 20 hours.

There are about 13 void periods a month, because the Moon changes sign 13 times a month. This is not a rare event — it is a regular, calculable rhythm.

What tradition makes of it

A phrase that recurs in classical texts is nihil agit — "the Moon performs nothing". This is not a warning that something bad will happen. It points to a different risk: that what you begin may not produce the result you expect.

Tradition frames the void not as a bad time but as a time without momentum. The Moon receives no fresh impulse from any planet, so neither, the reasoning goes, does what you start under it.

• Major purchases, especially things meant to last

• Routine work, continuing something already under way
• Finishing: closing, tidying, completing what was left half done

Why is it awkward to calculate?

A void begins at the exact instant of the Moon's last major aspect. Finding it means tracking the positions of the Moon and nine other bodies minute by minute and measuring the angles between them continuously.
