What is a rising sign?
Your rising sign (ascendant, ASC) is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It marks the start of the first house of your birth chart and sets the layout of every house in it.
Tradition links the rising sign to the face you show the world, first impressions, the body and your approach to life. If your Sun sign describes who you are and your Moon sign what you need, your rising sign describes how you meet the world.
How is the rising sign calculated?
Three things are needed: birth date, birth time and birthplace. First, the local birth time is converted to Universal Time (UTC) using the time zone rules of your birthplace on that date — including historical daylight saving time. Then the local sidereal time at that moment is found and, together with your birthplace's latitude, the point where the ecliptic crosses the eastern horizon is calculated.
This page uses the same formulas and the same city list as the ALVEM app. It was checked against the app's ephemeris engine on thousands of random birth dates: the difference in the rising degree is below one arcsecond.
How often does the rising sign change?
The rising sign changes about every two hours on average, but not every sign takes the same time to rise. At Istanbul's latitude, Aries and Pisces rise in just over an hour, while the signs from Leo to Scorpio take close to two and a half hours — which is why some rising signs are more common than others. The times we calculated for Istanbul:
| Sign | Time to rise (Istanbul) |
|---|---|
| ♈︎ Aries | 1 h 11 min |
| ♉︎ Taurus | 1 h 26 min |
| ♊︎ Gemini | 1 h 54 min |
| ♋︎ Cancer | 2 h 23 min |
| ♌︎ Leo | 2 h 33 min |
| ♍︎ Virgo | 2 h 32 min |
| ♎︎ Libra | 2 h 31 min |
| ♏︎ Scorpio | 2 h 33 min |
| ♐︎ Sagittarius | 2 h 23 min |
| ♑︎ Capricorn | 1 h 54 min |
| ♒︎ Aquarius | 1 h 26 min |
| ♓︎ Pisces | 1 h 10 min |

Frequently asked questions
I don't know my birth time. How can I find my rising sign?
Without a birth time the rising sign can't be calculated reliably, because it changes roughly every two hours. Try hospital records or family memories first. If the time is unknown, rectification — narrowing down the birth time from key events in your life — can be used; ALVEM has a screen for it.
What is the difference between the rising sign and the Sun sign?
Your Sun sign depends on your birth date and stays the same for about a month; it describes the core of your personality. Your rising sign depends on your birth time and place and changes about every two hours; it describes your outward face, first impressions and approach to life. Two people born on the same day can share a Sun sign but have different rising signs.
How accurate is this calculator?
It uses the ALVEM app's formulas and was checked against the app's ephemeris engine: the rising degree differs by less than one arcsecond. The real uncertainty comes from the birth time — if your recorded time was rounded and your rising sign is near a sign boundary, the calculator tells you.
My birthplace isn't on the list. What should I do?
Choose the city nearest to where you were born. Every degree of east–west difference (about 85 km) shifts the rising sign by roughly one degree; within the same region this rarely changes the result, but it can if your rising sign is right at a boundary.
Are my details stored?
No. The calculation happens entirely in your own browser; your birth date, time and place are never sent to a server or stored.
